MOBILE STREET WORKS

Street Works is a mobile outreach program that takes our services out of traditional facilities and brings them right onto the streets.

Street Outreach VanThe overall goal of this program is to help prevent the victimization of homeless and/or street youth. To this end, staff provide information and education to youth about services available to them, provide "on the street" counseling and provide food, clothing, and safe shelter as needed.

By being on the streets, staff are able to meet immediate needs when they arise. At times, an initial contact has resulted in finding a youth who is homeless and needs shelter, or has a place to stay but hasn't had anything to eat for a day or two. All youth contacted are given an outreach card with our shelter and outreach phone number, as well as the numbers of other local, state, and national hotlines. We ask them to hold on to the card should they ever need to access services or to pass it on to someone they may know who needs services.

We are currently providing these street outreach services to thirty-two of the thirty-three municipalities within Ocean County. We are out seven days per week. Our typical hours are from 3:00pm - 10:00pm, except for Fridays and Saturdays during the summer when we are out until 11:00pm. Our staff travels in teams of two, carry proper identification, and drive our van, which is clearly marked with our name and logo.
