TRANSITIONAL LIVING PROGRAM
The Transitional Living Program (TLP) was established in 2001 to meet the needs of older youth, ages 16-21. In the past, these youth were too old for traditional shelter services, yet they still required supervised housing and/or everyday life skills in order to become self-sufficient, independent adults.
The Transitional Living Program was created to meet the needs of these young adults. The TLP offers both "drop in" services for youth residing in safe housing situations, or longer term facilities for youth who are currently homeless.
Youth who participate in the Transitional Living Program receive the following services:
Educational and Vocational Counseling
Job Searching, Interviewing Skills, Resume Writing, Utilizing Community Resources, Educational Opportunities, SAT and GED preparation.
Weekly Support Groups
Anger Management, Drug/Alcohol Prevention, Peer Leadership, Parent/Sibling Support, along with other groups pertaining to self-sufficiency.
Referral and Case Management Services
Individual and Family Counseling
For youth who are homeless and need transitional housing, the TLP offers fully supervised housing and semi-supervised apartments in the Toms River area. The SHORE (Supportive Housing Opportunities through Rehabilitation and Encouragement) House is a supportive transitional housing facility that promotes a successful transition to adulthood for twelve youth at any given time. Participants, ages 18-21, are offered secure and stable living conditions for up to 18 months. While staying within the TLP, these youth receive life skill counseling and training including budget/financial management, menu planning, nutrition and food preparation, use and management of credit, consumer education, housekeeping, personal hygiene, safety instruction, planning for leisure/social activities and methods of obtaining vital documents (social security card, birth certificate, citizenship application, working papers, etc).
On site a second building, the TLP Educational Center, was built to provide life skills training, support services, and vocational counseling to all youth ages 16-21. These youth also utilize the programs offered through the education center - counseling, support groups, educational and vocation counseling.
ALL SERVICES ARE FREE, VOLUNTARY AND CONFIDENTIAL
